We Believe In Reincarnation
Once, all plastic came from the ground. Now, it grows from it. Releaf® begins in fields, not refineries. It’s designed to return— recyclable with PET, built for a world where nothing is wasted, and everything has a next life. This isn’t the end of plastic. It’s the beginning of better.
Plastic from plants, not fossil
Unlike conventional plastics, which use fossil feedstock, releaf® uses revolutionary technology to transform sugar from plants — nature’s candy — into durable, recyclable plastic.
Releaf® can also use various plant wastes, such as post-harvest corn stalks, wheat straw, and wood chips from forestry residues. We are even exploring the use of cotton-polyester-blend textile waste as feedstock for releaf®.
By harnessing valuable ingredients from nature, releaf® transforms plant matter into a revolutionary solution for packaging food and drinks.
Choosing releaf® has lots of benefits such as cutting down greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional plastics, glass and aluminium. Plus, releaf® can be recycled, easily fitting into the systems we already use.
A Sustainable Future, Available now
Looking for a plastic alternative that’s reliable, thoughtfully designed, and fits a lower-impact lifestyle? Great minds think alike! Releaf® is plant-based, recyclable, and developed for a future where materials stay in play — not just the landfill. So choose releaf®, for this means you'll be choosing products that vibe with your values and make a real difference!
Lower Carbon Footprint
Releaf® demonstrates a significantly lower carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle. Its production from renewable plant-based sources results in substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil-based plastics. Additionally, releaf®'s superior recyclability and compatibility with existing recycling systems further reduce its environmental impact. Life cycle assessments show that releaf® can achieve up to 73% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional plastics when considering both production and recycling, making it a more sustainable choice for packaging and other applications.

What is releaf®?
Releaf® is a plant-based, recyclable plastic made from PEF (polyethylene furanoate), developed by Avantium.
Why focus on PEF?
PEF has several advantages over traditional plastics like PET:
- Eco-Friendly: Plant-based and recyclable.
- Superior Barrier: 10x better oxygen barrier, 4x better CO2 barrier, and 2x better water barrier than PET.
- Lighter Packaging: Higher mechanical strength allows for lighter-weight packaging.
What applications is releaf® suitable for?
Releaf®'s PEF can replace materials like PET, glass, and aluminum in products such as:
- Bottles for drinks (soft drinks, water, alcohol, fruit juices)
- Food packaging
- Films and textiles
When will releaf® products be commercially available?
We expect releaf® to hit the stores in 2026. The official opening ceremony of our first commercial production plant was held on the 22 October 2024.
Is releaf® recyclable?
In June 2025, releaf® received official European RecyClass approval as fully compatible with existing PET recycling streams—so releaf® bottles and multilayer PET/PEF packaging can be recycled together with PET without disrupting standard recycling processes; this recognition is supported by an interim endorsement from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) through June 2027 and Critical Guidance from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in the US, making releaf® certified for recycling in both major markets and ready for widespread commercial launch.
Is releaf® biodegradable?
While PEF in releaf® isn’t readily biodegradable in natural environments, it does degrade faster than PET under certain conditions. Its main environmental benefits are being plant-based, recyclable, and having a lower overall impact throughout its lifecycle.
Who is the parent company behind releaf®?
Releaf® is developed by Avantium, a leading company in renewable and circular polymer materials.
